The Weekend Read * Why We Dress Better on Holiday: How to Create the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe
Hello,
There’s something rather interesting that happens the moment we go on holiday. We suddenly become better dressers. Our outfits feel more put together, our colours seem brighter and, if truth be known, we probably take a little more care.
Although we are the same person with the same body and the same wardrobe, somehow the way we dress on holiday looks fresher, more confident and more intentional. And yet when we are back home we find ourselves standing in front of our wardrobe full of the same clothes thinking we’ve got loads of items and nothing to wear.
This Easter weekend, whether you’re escaping to the sun or staying firmly planted in the unpredictable British spring weather, is the perfect moment to ask yourself why on holiday do you feel like you always get it right and how do we bring that version of ourselves home?
Holiday You vs Real-Life You
Let’s start with a truth we see time and time again with clients. When you pack for a holiday, you edit. You don’t pack everything, you take your favourite pieces you love in colours that work together. In short, you pack outfits that make sense and are cohesive. You think ahead: will this go with that? Can I wear this more than once? Do I feel good in this?
And just like that, without even realising it, you’ve created a holiday capsule wardrobe. We make fewer choices but better ones. This is where the magic happens, because confidence doesn’t come from having more clothes, it comes from having the right clothes.
Jenny and I hear a lot of women say they wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. On holiday, you’ve packed that 20%, so no wonder it works.
The Easter Escape Challenge: One Wardrobe, Two Climates
Now here’s where it gets interesting. Easter dressing can be tricky. One minute it’s upwards of 22 degrees and you’re dreaming of linen and sandals. The next, you’re back in the UK where a chilly breeze makes it feel more like 9 degrees with a raincloud hovering overhead.
So instead of packing or dressing for either of these, we’re going to dress for both. Think of this as your Easter Escape Capsule, a small, carefully chosen collection that works in the sunshine, in the British spring and everywhere in between.
The Capsule That Actually Works
We’re not talking Pinterest fantasy wardrobes here, this is real life. Imagine a wardrobe of around 10–12 pieces that all work together effortlessly:
We’re not talking Pinterest fantasy wardrobes here, this is real life. Imagine a wardrobe of around 10–12 pieces that all work together effortlessly:
- A pair of well-fitting jeans or lightweight trousers that you can dress up or down.
- A relaxed shirt that works open over a vest, tucked in, or layered under knitwear.
- A simple t-shirt or two in your best colours, not just default black or white if you're a Winter.
- A lightweight knit for cooler mornings and evenings.
- A soft blazer or jacket that instantly pulls everything together.
- A dress that can flex paired with trainers by day and sandals or smarter shoes by night.
- A pair of comfortable trainers or flats.
- A smarter shoe or sandal option.
- A scarf or accessory that adds personality and warmth when needed.
There's nothing revolutionary here, but when the colours work together and more importantly, work for you, everything suddenly becomes easier.
Why Colour Changes Everything
This is where we see the biggest shift; when your wardrobe is built around colours that suit you, your skin looks clearer, your eyes brighter and you look more awake even when you’re not!
Crucially, everything mixes and matches without effort. Compare that to a wardrobe built on random purchases, trends, or default black and suddenly getting dressed becomes hard work again.
Jenny and I are always reminding our clients that only about a quarter of people truly suit black and white, yet it’s what most people pack just in case. There are always better options.
One Outfit, Two Ways
Let’s make this really practical. Take a simple outfit: a soft shirt, relaxed trousers and trainers. Then let's create two ways to wear this outfit for two different climates.
The holiday version: Sleeves rolled up, a couple of buttons undone, perhaps a pop of colour in a necklace or lip and some comfy footwear in a great wow colour for walking in. This creates an effortless, relaxed and confident look.
The back home version: Add a lightweight knit or jacket, keep on your same wow coloured trainers and layer with a scarf in a wow shade.
What you have achieved here is the same outfit, but with a completely different feel. This is the secret most wardrobes are missing.
When your wardrobe is cohesive, intentional and aligned to your colouring and style, you remove the guesswork. No more panic outfit changes, overpacking or defaulting to safe but uninspiring choices. Instead, you get, ease, clarity and that lovely feeling that it just works.
A Little Challenge for You…
Over the long weekend, ask yourself this: Could you pack, or dress for 5 days using just 10–12 pieces? And more importantly, would everything go with everything else? If the answer is no, it’s not about needing more clothes, it’s about creating a wardrobe that works harder for you.
Final Thoughts: Bringing The Holiday Version of You Home
We know the holiday version of you isn’t more stylish, she’s just more intentional. She chooses better, wears what she loves and doesn’t overcomplicate things. The best part is that you don’t need a plane ticket to be able to dress like this.
If this has got you thinking about your own wardrobe and how to make it feel easier, more cohesive, and more you, then this is exactly what we do every day with our clients. From colour to style to wardrobe edits, it’s all about helping you create a wardrobe that works wherever you are. Because getting dressed shouldn’t feel hard, and confidence shouldn’t be reserved just for holidays.
Next week on the Weekend Read we'll be talking about Evening wear and how the rules of dressing up have changed.
Best wishes,
Judi & Jenny xx
